Re: Aspire S7 BIOS upgrade killed PC

Atleast a reply - Ryan. Still not a great situation huh?

Hope you Cancelled the bios Update to avoid future costumers running Into the same trouble... Atleast till it's fixed.

What was the technical reason for the update anyway?

Re: Aspire S7 BIOS upgrade killed PC

Despite efforts to urge Acer to deal with this problem, apparently they have not been able to resolve the issue and it has now happened to me. My S7, which is only 2 months old, has completely died during a BIOS update - an update initiated by the Acer live updater. The screen is completely black and there is just nothing - it is completely dead.

Really frustrated by the Support staff who were unable to offer information about the likekihood of any of my data being retreived. All they can tell me is it will take at least 10 days. As those of you who have experienced this know, it is really awful - lost data, work assignments not delivered, loads of stress, and no idea when I'll be up and running and with what, if any, files intact.

Not good.

Re: Aspire S7 BIOS upgrade killed PC

Mine is on it's Way back from service. I fear what state it is in...

About support I was happy, but now I can't get my shipping Expenses refunded! This is crap, that I personally need to throw in another 100 $ on this already expensive laptop, because an Acer update killed it. That fight is not over yet I Can assure you.

I'll post when I receive my laptop - but I agree Vmk, stress and loss of a bunch of working hour and material is a minor disaster.

Re: Aspire S7 BIOS upgrade killed PC

Glad your laptop is on its way back - do let us know whether your data is in one piece - although I almost dread to hear.

And yes, you should definitely be refunded for your shipping. I got the impression I wouldn't have to pay for that, but not sure yet - let's see.

More to follow.....

Re: Aspire S7 BIOS upgrade killed PC

Update!

Just recieved my laptop back from service today... and... *drums*... I'm writing on it now, all is well MY DATA ARE INTACT, and I still love the little thing.

Powers up fast as lightning.

Also, my local support promised me that I would get a refund on my shipping expences - they still need to wire the money, but I have no doubt they will.

I havn't checked if they at service updated the bios to the newest version, but I surely hope so. Anyone know how I can check what bios I'm running now?

So - despite the lost working hours and the general inconvenience, I now have my laptop back and working.

Don't despair guys :smileyhappy:

Re: Aspire S7 BIOS upgrade killed PC

Something similar happened to me recently. After upgrading the BIOS from ver. 3.15 to 3.18 on my Acer Aspire S7-391, my notebook's specifications dropped. I noticed the VGA's total memory dropped from 3079 MB to 1792 MB. Because of this, it takes quite a long time to render images and play games. Is there anyway to downgade the BIOS?

Re: Aspire S7 BIOS upgrade killed PC

I had the same problem. I just bought an Acer Aspire S7-392 earlier this year and the BIOS update popped up via Windows Live Update prompting me to update the BIOS a few months ago but I just ignored it. Unfortunately today, I decided to just get rid of the annoying pop up prompt and decided to upgrade it. Upon updrading the BIOS in windows environment itself, my screen started to flicker and it went on turning on and off for a few times until a Windows 8 light blue sceen appear saying that there's something wrong with the video/graphic card "video_tdr_failure igdkmd32.sys" error and it is sending a report to Microsoft and will restart automatically. So I waited till it reached 100%. It did reached 100% but it's been that way for a few hours. So I decided to restart it by holding on the power button and it doesn't work. It just didn't want to shut down, I can hear the fan working hard. After trying to turn it off, I discovered the battery hole underneath the laptop and decided to poke it. I finally poked it with a very tiny point pin and it successfully shuts down. Once I turn it back on, nothing happened except for the blue LED power light just turns on. The screen is totally blank with no logos or bios, no nothing. The laptop seems to be slient, I don't think the HDD and fan is even operating.

Anyway after searching the web for a few hours to find a solution, I came across a similar problem but it's for Acer Asipre One where there's also a problem with the BIOS and it was solved by flashing the BIOS. This is done by simply downloading the BIOS software from the Acer Support website and renaming the files and placing them in a flashdrive. This flashdrive is then placed on the laptop and while turning on the laptop, the FN+ESC button it pressed continuously even before turning on the latop to initiate the flashing processes.

However, I couldn't find this BIOS software for S7-392, the only BIOS software available is only for use within Windows environment and not when turning on the laptop.

I hope Acer will upload a BIOS flash that can operate during the time when the laptop is first turned on. I have spent a lot to purchase this laptop thinking it would last long without any problem and I don't want to spend more to send it to the service center, just to flash the BIOS.

By the way, the new BIOS update that causes this problem is still on the website. I would have thought Acer would have take note of these complains and remove it already by now. Plus the repair BIOS flash software should be downloadable already to fix this problem. I just hate to think that this is one way Acer is planning to increase their revenue.

Re: Aspire S7 BIOS upgrade killed PC

hi,

i'm in the same shoes now.

i found that the bios files available on the downlpad pages are just executable archives.

so you may extract them by using winrar or winzip.

however, i don't seem to do the right thing when i try to recover the bios using usb stick.

please, let me know the exact process if it's succes in your case :smileyhappy:

Re: Aspire S7 BIOS upgrade killed PC

Here is an update at last.

Acer were unable to repair my laptop and finally after a month of wrangling they have given me a refund.

I do want to say how disaapointing this experience has been. At no point did Acer acknowledge the real 'cost' to me of this disaster - the lost work, the hours wasted setting up the laptop, the time without it. All I heard from them was that they were fulfling their statutary obligations. There was absolutely no customer service beyond the total minimum and no human face to the organization throughout this ordeal.

Of course things go wrong, but this actually provides an opportunity for a company to excel. Sadly not in this case: Acer - not good enough!
