After hours of browsing around the net, I found 1 solution that works for me (we have the same problem; windows 8.1 just won't shutdown)
1) Right-click on the new start button
2) Click the "Power Options"
3) On the Power Options window, click the "Choose what the power buttons do". It will open the system settings window
4) Select the "Change settings that are currently unavailable" (There is a Shield icon next to it)
5) On the shutdown settings, unselect the option "Turn on fast startup (recommemded)"
6) Click "Save Changes"
I hope this trick will help. ![]()

Mine kept powering off without the power adapter and it kept getting worse where it would not even turn on without the power adapter and the battery was fully charged... Did Bios update and reset the battery but nothing... Sent it it for repair and when I got it back, it turned on and after about 3 minutes, it powered off again. I used it for about 3 days and the problem got worse and started powering off ranmomly when it was on battery power. Just sent it in for a re-repair of the problem... I am starting to get very impatient on this issue and hopefully they can fix this permanently this time around.
Does Acer take back a laptop that keeps having problems under warranty?

I just wanted to add to this that I fixed the problem on my machine by installing the latest Intel video driver. The version is 15.36.3.64.3907.

After installing this and rebooting, my issue went away, FINALLY! Hope this helps if anyone is still experiencing this annoying issue.
