Windows 8 have made some changes to the way a laptop wakes up and power management. This is done to reduce the power consumption and boot time. This can be seen when compared to windows 7, however the side effect of making such changes is that drivers will have to be re written to fit the protocol of Windows 8.
If you are having problem with wifi in windows 8, most probaly is that the driver was not written properly for Windows 8. I don't think we can blame Microsoft for making advances in technology, but it should always be the manufacturer's responsibility to provide hardware driver support.
In this case Qualcomm has produce a generic driver for its product and it as Acer used its component, it will have to port the driver to the platform they are building, in this case the Acer S7.
In the end of the day, it is still up to Acer to make the driver functional.

And a bit of sunshine (although I cycled through the rain for half an hour just now). I have my S7 running perfectly on version .221 of the driver - for about a month now. I've been switching between 3 Wi-Fi and one wired network on a very frequent basis, without problem. I must add that I disabled power management on the Wi-Fi device, per the instructions on this forum. Looks like, with the previous posts in mind, this is indeed a power management issue.
BTW - people were talking about the .218 driver for a few days here, but all I can find on the international as well as Dutch Acer support sites is .217v3???

Well, I've had 218 installed for nearly a week now. It was a push update so I have no idea why I got it and others haven't. Maybe because I bought my S7 in the US. Maybe Acer are updating on a trial basis - I have no idea but I was back in the US again when I got the update. I'm back in the UK right now though.
Over the last week I suppose I've used my S7 on wifi maybe 3 hours a day (I mainly use it on ethernet cable at work) and it's dropped out about 3 times. So on balance I would say it's better but not solved. It only drops for a couple of seconds and whilst others can't live with that, I can as I love the other features of the S7.

Yep - I disabled the power settings from within the driver and from power management.
The longer I use it the better it seems to get.

I have the same "repeating letters" issue on my S7. Does someone know the solution?

FWIW I'm using 10.0.0.222 from necacom.net and haven't had any drops.

Thanks Half_Colin! I have a new Aspire V5 preloaded with Windows 8. Everything was fine for 1st couple months until a couple weeks ago. Then one day I could not stay connected to the wifi. Lots of discussions about needing to load different drivers but many people replyed with the same disconnecting problem after loading the different drivers. So, I looked for what I hoped to be a simple fix and you posted it.
Steps were as you stated but I will ad what I saw on my scereen for my Aspire V5 Windows 8
Go to Control Panel, type Device Manager in upper right search box click on Device Manager, Find and click on Network Adapters from the list, Click on Qualcomm Atheros .... Right Click and select Properties, then select Power Management Tab, then uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power", click OK.
Then it worked! I have not had problem with connecting to the wifi for several days now!
Hope this helps others.
