I thought my battery was dead since it had a red X over the battery and would not work unless plugged in.  changed the battery and it still has a red X over the battery and shows "no battery is detected" when i scroll to the battery symbol.  It will work when i disconnect the power but i don't know for how long since i just changed it a couple of hours ago.

Any thoughts on what is going on?

Thanks for any input.

It might simply be Windows not recognising the new battery. Can you leave it for a few hours to see how long the laptop lasts? If it's a normalish time on the new battery, then you could try a third-party battery program for Windows to provide you with battery information during usage.
