Problems recovering disk space.

Whenever I run Disk Cleanup on C:, the amount of free space available immediately DECREASES. Why?

I ran the disk defragmenter (39 hours) and it did nothing. The c: drive was 60% fragmented before and after running it.

Windows 7. Acer Aspire notebook model KAWG0.

There was malware there. Had everything cleaned out. System is normal now.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

That amount of time defraggin?  What are you doing with your computer?

60% is quite a bit of fragmentation, have you run the error check?

I did not do anything while defrag was running. The anti virus program AVG was enabled, but it was not running a scan.

I was also connected to my ISP, but I did not access the WWW.

What is the error check? How do I run it?

my-computer (or computer in the start menu w7), rt-click on the drive, selevt properties, then click the tools tab.

CHKDSK ran and found that some free space had been flagged as allocated.

I notice that my free space on c: keeps dropping even when I am doing nothing on the system.

I downloaded and ran a virus/spychecker program from Microsoft - msert.

It found and removed 3 infected files, but my free space is still dropping constantly.

At this rate it will soon go to zero free space.

I don't know what else to do.

First run something like enditall (http://enditall.en.softonic.com/), then I would run the virus scan, plus malwarebytes, plus super-anti-spyware (all free to download and use) all one after another.

Your virus scan found something, you are more than likely infected. Strange behavior.
