So i boot into xp and my desktop shows up but now start menu or icons and the only thing that does anything is the mouse pointer. even ctrl alt del does nothing.

Ive ran chkdisk several times and it is telling me some folders are unreadable.

I found a copy of XP disc and im trying to run the recovery but it wants an admin password. None of my normal passwords are working.

I dont know what to do from here, and i cant seem to get any support from acer bc im out of warranty and if i try and use the chat help it doesnt find my s/n

I dont want to reformat but its looking like the only option right now.

Laptop is an aspire 3000 (ancient) but it has some tax info on it i need!

As of 4/8/2014, Microsoft has ended support for Windows XP. Anti-virus will not protect your computer. You will get malware every time you go on the web.

    Download and run

    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

i need to recover it so i can get some tax info off of it, and a few other files.

the only thing i use this laptop for really is to tune my car via usb/obd2 cable

You are talking about a Bios password?

Remove the HDD and connect it to another computer via a USB cable. You will be able to get all your info off it.
