Re: Haswell Aspire R7 US release information?

For those looking for stylus support.... looks like it's there:

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2427403,00.asp

I still haven't seen any mention of a msata cache drive, which is a disappointing change with the newer model (planned on swapping it out with something bigger and using it as the system drive).

They are currently selling refurbs of the original on ebay for $550 ($600-$50 ebay voucher). Price was too good to resist so I put in an order on that.

The above PCMag article contradicts the description of R7-572-6423 already sellling at Best Buy. The Best Buy listing does not mention anything about suporting an Active Pen:

Haswell Aspire R7 released this week - stylus support

I ordered one Tuesday, hope to pick it up at the local Best Buy tomorrow or Saturday.  I'll be getting the optional stylus as soon as it is available, if not this week.  The PCMag article mentioned above states:

"The Acer Aspire R7-572-6423 will be sold exclusively through Best Buy, with the new laptop selling for $899 and the optional active stylus selling separately for an additional $49. Both will be available online and in Best Buy stores in early December."

Re: Haswell Aspire R7 released this week - stylus support

Ordered Tue night, picked it up Friday at Best Buy.  Stylus isn't available yet.  It is very nice looking, well built, solid.  Also large and heavy.  Great screen.  Wifi works very well - 21.94/6.03 Mbps download/upload speeds using speedtest.comcast.net

Question:  Can an SSD be added to it without removing the HD?

Re: Haswell Aspire R7 released this week - stylus support

yeh just got mine

how to check what type of wifi card is in it? still broadcom, not sure how to tell if different from previous model

^^^^if its has 2 drive spots then should be possible, but not just one HD unit and space. would be cool to get a 256gig SSD for windows system and then the 1TB to store music and movies

Re: Haswell Aspire R7 released this week - stylus support

[ Editado ]

The 571 had UNUSABLE Wifi. (a previous 700 post string here)

http://community.acer.com/t5/Notebooks-Netbooks/Poor-Wifi-on-new-Aspire-R7/td-p/94855

The New model has ANOTHER Dealbreaker!

They dropped the 24GB SSD Cache from the 5400 RPM HD so you have 2003 grade HD.

No SSD and NO small cache SSD.

Not even an option for an SSD.

Just a 12th Century 5400 rpm drive.

So this computer, despite Haswell and hopefully fixed Wifi, will be Slower IMO.

And Anand Tech thinks so to:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/7534/acer-aspire-r7572-haswell-and-an-active-digitizer

They don't even think the mobile Haswell is faster than the last.

I would much rather have had/stuck with a 3rd Gen processor and gotten any SSD.

I Really wanted the 571 and waited patiently after the infamous unusable Wifi.

NOW.. ANOTHER Dealbreaker.

A Naked super-slow 5400 RPM drive.

They apparently want a Best Buy 899 price, and not a DIME more... because it would only cost a dime to to put the 24gb SSD Cache back on and double many oft used speeds like start up.

So unless Geek Squad can deliver me one (working) with an SSD.. I give up.

Re: Haswell Aspire R7 released this week - stylus support

Apparently the SSD is history.  The open question is whether or not the slot for it is also gone.  Can an SSD be added without having to pull the 1TB HD?

According to one of the articles I read from a professional reviewer, there are now 2 slots for RAM (2 X 4 GB = 8GB).  Since the 571 only had one slot, he speculated that the additional slot was at the expense of the SSD slot.  Can anyone confirm this?

I have been waiting for the wifi issue to be resolved, and was also hoping that the 572 would be the answer.  Unfortunately, the first and only review of the 572 on the Best Buy website gives it only 1 star due to the continued wifi problem.  This is very frustrating.

I will buy the 572 as soon as I hear a more definitive answer as to the wifi problem and solution.  The other thread specifically addressing this issue was closed prematurely.  Acer-Corey stated:  "At this point, we are going to close this thread. While we welcome and encourage users to discuss issues if they have them, we feel that this thread is no longer helpful to a new user who may be experiencing similiar issues."

I completely disagree with this.  The thread was closed before there was an acceptable number of satisfied users.  I also wonder what the true extent of the wifi problems are.  Is it only affecting a small percentage of the R7s as Acer-Corey has stated?  Since only those who experience problems write about them, it's hard to gauge what the situation is with those that aren't.  However, the deal breaker with me is that the closed thread had several cases of individuals receiving replacement R7s with the same problem.  If the problem was truly only occuring in a small percentage of them, then this statistically wouldn't happen.

[ Editado ]

they closed that thread? thats silly. what was the solution? (meaning an actual fix, wasnt aware there was one).

what good reason to close a thread if people are still having problems? how else to find a solution when they close on that topic?

at any rate, I got the new 572, SNID 342 lol, and the wifi problem is gone for me. I could never get over 15mb up or down no matter how close to the router on the 571, but now get around 29mb with it,so looks like its solved. (i pay for fios with advertise 25up and 25down,yes im getting more than advertised, which i was able to get on my android phone as well)

would really like more info on how to slide a SSD up in here, would make things a bit more zippy!!

loving the 1TB drive because i rip and store a lot of movies on my unit

with the haswell im seeing an additional 2hours or so of continuous usage, so roughly 6 hours

this really isnt considered an ultrabook so im happy with that

i just love the easy hinge and the placement of the trackpad

Re: Haswell Aspire R7 US release information?

It's encouraging to see that someone with a prior wifi issue with the 571 is not experiencing the same problem with the 572. Since a reviewer on the best buy site IS having the same problem with the 572, the problem isn't completely fixed. Or it only manifests itself under certain conditions.

Will those of you that have normal wifi with the new 572 please post the conditions ? Router type, g, n, dual band?

Re: Haswell Aspire R7 US release information?

I have the standard wifi router that comes with a FIOS installation of a couple years ago, N.

at work we use a $25 Netgear N router

Definitely no wifi problem here.
