Cannot boot from USB in BIOS

As my computer boots up, I have the option to enter BIOS settings by pressing F2. Prior to using Linux Mint, which I have used to completely replace the stock Windows 8, I had the ability to change the boot priority order, but after installing Mint I can no longer change it! From this same BIOS settings menu, I have enabled the ability to manually choosing which device to boot from, F12. Now when my AO756 boots up and I press F12 without the bootable USB stick plugged in, I have the option to boot from my HDD or a Network-- but with the USB stick plugged in, I press F12 and all I get is a black screen with a white underscore in the upper left-hand corner. It does not blink, it's just a stationary underscore. How I can I get this to stop and boot from my USB stick?
