Re: Acer R7-572 SSD or mSata

I used a 16GB drive for my R7-571 Recovery, and I've seen others say the same. But you're the second person I've seen saying they need 32GB. I wonder if newer R7-572 models or some regions require more than 16GB for recovery?

I hope it's not just Acer bloatware making us spend more on backups that Acer really should be providing for us anyway!

ahhhh...gotcha...that's probably it. Sucks that I have to head back and get a 32gb now instead of a 16 :-/ Thanks.

Re: Acer R7-572 SSD or mSata

[ Editado ]

Didn't want to make a whole new topic for this question, cause it's pretty related. Sorry for reviving an old thread...

My question is, as far as performance goes, would I be better off installing a bigger SSD in the mSATA drive to replace the 24GB SSD that's currently in there or would I be better off replacing the 500GB HDD with a (smaller than 500GB) SSD?

I have the Aspire R7 571-6858

Thank you!

Oh, also, since you guys seem to be really knowledgeable, is this okay to switch out for the 2GB RAM? [http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231704

And there's no way to put a graphics card on this, right?

Sorry for all the unrelated questions... Again, thanks!

Re: Acer R7-572 SSD or mSata

Easy one first: no, it's not a laptop with MXM, so you cannot change the graphics card or add a new one.

That memory looks fine: 204-pin, DDR3-1600. Do you have the 6GB model? 6GB should be fine - are you filling your memory? I managed to fill my 4GB model when running Civ V at the same time that I'd left a few dozen Chrome tabs open! Then again, you may be right - that memory will be shared between your CPU's graphics as well as the system. I have the separate GPU with its own memory.

I physically removed my HDD, and I've been doing great with just an msata 128GB drive. Less weight and less battery drain. If you can get a bargain on a 256GB msata SSD, that should be enough. Whack the 500GB HDD in a USB3 enclosure, perhaps.

Re: Acer R7-572 SSD or mSata

Hi,

I just installed a samsung 256 840 msata.  I kept the 1 TB drive and used samsung's cloning software.  I am able to boot directly into the msata.  But, the OS would "crash" almost every 30 seconds.  It remains in windows but the whole desktop "blinks" and it cycles back to the main desktop.  What could be happening?  I made a back up to a USB drive before I cloned the original drive.  Should I do a re-install into the MSATA?  Should I remove the 1 TB before re-installing?

Thanks!

Re: Acer R7-572 SSD or mSata

I am having the exact problem as sirach38. I have an R7 572 and put in a 256GB Samsung msata, I used the Samsung data migration software to clone the HDD to SSD, and started booting from the SSD. It can't handle programs and closes them soon as they're started, and also the screen blinks a lot.

So I factory reset the laptop to start fresh, and did the same procedure of cloning ... With same results but worse - the instability and blinking are almost nonstop.

Hoping to find some help on this, thanks

Re: Acer R7-572 SSD or mSata

I wonder if this is a Samsung 840 and R7 compatibility issue

Re: Acer R7-572 SSD or mSata

It's not a compatibility problem. I finally figured it out and the samsung clone software won't work. Make sure you create a usb backup stick (at least 32 gb). Then remove the 1 TB drive and install the msata. Then attach the usb stick and make sure you enable F12 in the bios. When you restart the machine, press F12 so that you can boot into the usb stick then do a new install. After you're done, then you can re-install the 1 TB drive. I haven't erased the original drive. I just want to make sure everything is ok. So far so good. Hope this helps!

Re: Acer R7-572 SSD or mSata

Thank you! I'm actually doing the exact thing right now, it seems to be working.  I'm now booted from the SSD and downloading all my windows updates and so far so good too.  Thanks!

Re: Acer R7-572 SSD or mSata

Might you confirm whether your R7-572 is the R7-572-6423 or the R7-572-6805? I'm trying to ascertain whether the -6805 has an mSATA slot before placing an order, as that is what currently seems to be on the shelves. Thanks.
