i'm working on a friend's laptop ( aspire 5253 ) that had a root kit virus.  after spending hours trying to get it out I decided to wipe the hard drive.  I stuck the Win7 started the install until i got to the message of BOOTMGR is missing. After moving forward the system is now looking for media drivers, most likely hard disk...?  There's not a device driver disk available for this laptop and the acer website doesn't have the driver it is looking for.  any suggestions on how to fix this?  thx in advance

    1. On a different computer, download the tool and create Windows 10 installation media.

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

    2.  Go in to aspire 5253 BIOS settings to enable the Boot Menu so you can boot to USB or DVD and then save/exit.

    3.  Boot the windows 10 media that you created in step 1.

    4.  When you see the screen below, press SHIFT-F10 so you can access a Command Prompt

    5. Use "diskpart clean" to not only properly wipe the hard drive, but also to put it in an uninitialized state (works for both hard drives and solid state drives)

    6. remove windows 10 installation media and insert windows 7 installation media.

    7.  Power down computer (turn off the computer)

    8. Turn on computer and install windows 7.  Select custom install.  Do not partition or format the hard drive.  Just click on the drive (unallocated space) where you want to install windows and click "next".  The windows installer will automatically partition and format your drive for you. (Or if you're using Acer recovery media, follow Acer's instructions)

    9. Windows 7 drivers are here:

    http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Also, instead of installing windows 7, you can install windows 10 if you want to give it a shot, but you'll need to enter the windows 7 key at some point so you can activate the free upgrade. It's difficult to say whether or not Windows will find all of the windows 10 drivers for your computer.  You may have to go directly to the component manufactures website to find windows 10 drivers.  Acer doesn't provide windows 10 drivers for your computer model...and your computer may or may not work properly with windows 10)
