I own a aspire 8920g which was preinstalled with windows Vista. I recieved a free windows 7 upgrade disc which I now have lost several years ago. I have recently upgraded to w10 and my product has a "Digital entitlement". Since I now feel that all these upgrades has impacted my laptops performace Im interested in making a clean w10 install. any takes on how to approach it? Do I need the product key or will it still give me the" Digital entitlement". If I need the key, how do I retrieve it?

if you already did the windows 10 upgrade and your copy is authenticated, a digital key is stored on Microsoft servers, so you just need to re-install windows 10, skip product key steps request during installation and then connect to the web to have it authenticated.

    nothing else.

    1. Backup your important personal files

    2. Create the windows 10 media

    3. Go in your BIOS settings and make changes so you can boot to DVD or USB (enable the Boot Menu)

    4. Boot the media that you created in step 2

    5. When you see the screen below, press SHIFT-F10 to get a command prompt

    6. Use diskpart clean to wipe your hard drive.  Be careful and follow instructions carefully including spoilers.

    7. Install windows 10.  Select custom install.  Click on your drive (unallocated space), and then click next. (Don't partition or format, as the windows installer will do that for you automatically when you click "next")

    8.  You don't need to enter a key since you already have digital entitlement.  Just click "skip", " not now"or " do this later" and it will automatically activate when it's finished installing.

    9. You'll have to hope for the best with drivers or search the internet/google (Intel Driver update Utility) etc..if you have problems.  Maybe Windows will install exactly what drivers you need.

Those are instructions (above) for clean install, if you just want to try recovery, go to settings>update and security>recovery.  However, recovery won't give you a clean/fresh MBR....so I recommend the 9 steps above for best performance and no chance of carryover rootkit MBR infection....especially since you have a legacy BIOS computer.

    just as side note:

the US MCT will download the first windows 10 release 10240, if you want the latest 1511 please use this link to download the newset MCT version:

    http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/C/4/1C41BC6B-F8AB-403B-B04E-C96ED6047488/MediaCreationTool.exe

it will create a single iso for both Home and PRO version and if needed a single iso for x86/x64 version too.

EDIT: at least until this link will last.

I used that desktop uploader app.  I still don't have all my photos and videos backed up to google photo (the cloud) and organized, because my ISP only allows me 150 GB per month usage.  It will probably take me another year to get everything in the cloud.  I still have a lot of video on USB drives now.  But thankfully nothing important on my computer.
