It would help to know the Acer model and number? Is it a factory-installed Win10?

Assuming you have insyde h2o UEFI......    I don't have your computer model.  Make sure you have the latest BIOS/UEFI.  Make sure you backup your important personal files in case something goes wrong.

Make sure you create a factory default USB recovery drive (recovery media) before you begin.  That way you'll always be able to put the computer back to factory condition if something goes wrong.

    1. Go in to UEFI settings and create a supervisor password

    2.  Make sure secure boot is enabled.  Don't disable secure boot.

    3. On my computer, I shrank the C drive by about 30 GB so I could have some unallocated space to install Linux, but Linux doesn't need that much space.  See Ubuntu FAQ for more info.

    4. Create UEFI/GPT Linux media.

    6.  I mainly use Windows so I didn't use F6 as eelcoherder suggested.

    7.  Make sure you have the F12 boot menu enabled in the UEFI/BIOS.

    8. On my computer, Windows 10 boots by default.  If I want to boot Linux, I must restart the computer and hit the F12 key at the Acer screen.

There's lots of tutorials about Linux and installing Linux on the internet if my instructions don't make sense.

Firstly, thank you for the detailed reply to OP question. I'd like you to expand on a related issue if you would.

My machine is Aspire E 575G.

The newest BIOS version for Aspire E 575G is BIOS 1.25, which is the BIOS version that everyone is having issues with. My installed BIOS is 1.18. I have not installed any version of Linux yet due to what I experienced when trying to boot live from USB.

For it to boot I have to switch to Legacy in BIOS. Then I ran Tails and Mint live from USB, both having the same issues.

It worked.... kinda. The trackpad is painfully slow and there may be performance degradation, but I can't tell due to how slow the trackpad is. It takes 5 minutes to get it to go where I want (exaggeration) as well as multiple clicks to register selecting an option. But they do boot and it does work, poorly. That may be performance or it may be specific to the trackpad. I don't know how to test that simply due to how laggy the entire process is.

I have read that Linux on Acer has issues (both using the trackpad and in general) when booting using the Legacy boot mode and as mentioned with BIOS version 1.25. I have also read that once users get to BIOS 1.31 or above that it fixes several issues, but couldn't find that this fix would work for my specific machine. Aspire E 575G

Do I load the latest BIOS even if it isn't on my specific devices page of drivers?

    WILLxLOVE,

My instructions probably won't work for your computer.  Acer and Insyde H20 altered their UEFI with newer computers.   Since you have a newer Acer computer with skylake or kaby lake, I would look at the thread below.

    http://community.acer.com/t5/E-F-and-M-Series-Laptops/ES1-132-cannot-install-other-OS-than-Windows-10-BIOS-options/td-p/476726/page/2

Edit:  I think you should update your computer to the latest BIOS.  I would.

Thanks for the quick reply. Latest being what is offered on my devices specific page (BIOS 1.25) or 1.31 or later?

If you have E5-575G, it would appear that the latest is 1.25.

If you want to start a new topic and ask "what is the latest BIOS for your computer model", you can do that.

Some E5-575G are skylake and some are kaby lake.  If you start a new topic, please list your complete model number.

So just to be clear, the logic is since my machine is newer, I shouldn't have the same issues others are having booting linux with 1.25 on similar machines?

Please start a new topic to ask about the BIOS and please list your complete model number.  I don't have a newer computer.  I'm still using "old" 4th gen Haswell.
