HDD TOTALLY smoked.  Bought an ADATA SSD, installed this and tried to use Acer recovery disks to restore to factory defaults but failed. Also tried to use Windows 10 image (iso) to do a clean OS install but this failed as well.   Bios recognizes the SSD but keeps say ing no OS found.  Help?  Suggestions? Thanks!!

you need to explain better the issue.

    SSD not recognised during installation?

OS installed but you can't boot?

how is set SATA on your laptop?

    IDE or AHCI?

SATA is set to AHCI. I am booting to DVD where I have tried both my recovery disks and a Windows 10 image file. Neither one of them works . The recovery disks load for a while and then stop with the BIOS message "OS not found ". The windows 10 ISO just hangs with a black screen and no message. The bios sees the SSD and that is boot option number two. Thanks for your reply.

if recovery disks gave you an "OS nout found" they are not bootable.

instead of changing the boot priority list on BIOS, check if your BIOS has an option to activate F12 at boot, so you can manually choose the correct bootable device.

About windows 10, i don't have any ideas why hanged with a black screen only.

I did use F 12 and selected the DVD drive with the recovery disks. It loads for a while and then I get an error message saying that a file cannot load. When I click OK system takes me to a black screen where it says no OS found.

can be a support problem, it happened in the past on recovery disks.

about windows 10, are you using DVD or USB flash drive?

are you sure the ISO file was burn correctly for your laptop?

that's a Disk support error or corrupted burn file.

try with a windows 8.1 iso too but use an USB flash drive:

This laptop came with Windows 7, when I tried to download a new iso from Microsoft after entering the Acer Prodcut Key it wouldn't take it.  The message said to contact the manufacturer meaning Acer.  Can I get a Windows installation disk from Acer for this machine?  I have what I believe is a good Windows 10 iso but as I said it won't boot to that DVD.  Do I need to copy the iso to the new SSD and then boot to that drive?

no, don't copy the iso to the SSD.

    download Rufus:

    https://rufus.akeo.ie/?locale=en_US

plug an 8GB USB flash drive, select ISO image from the dropdown menu near  "create a bootable disk", click the little icon to the right and load the iso file.

partition scheme must be MBR for BIOS (not UEFI) and format as FAT32 (if it gives you an error, select NTFS)

let it burn the image, then try to boot your laptop from the USB flash drive.
