Aspire es1-512 laptops have both Atheros and Broadcom wifi drivers.   Which wifi cards work in this laptop?

THANK YOU PHILETUS.   I was very sad to see Acer going to whitelisting on the wireless cards - it seems I am stuck with a 1X1 solution unless they do a bios upgrade and open up a wireless AC solution.  The ES1 is an amazing little Atom Quad core for the price.

    Thanks again!

As far as I know, Acer does not have white lists in bios. Did you get a "Unauthorized" warning?

No, It installs a card properly - device manager shows it as working - but you cannot toggle the wifi switch.

Same result for 6 cards I have tried.

Have you tried reinstalling Launch Manager?

Yes, however,  for windows 10 (which is what the machine came with) they call it Quick Access.   It toggles the original wifi card nicely.   If it is not whitelinting, then I am convinced it has to be hardware unique.   Either the Bluetooth portion of the card is incompatible (some cards use USB and some cards use direct control) or the WiFi portion of the card is unique to the Atom processor (meaning the two wifi cards that acer lists are for tablet machines).  Either way I will just add a usb WiFi dongle.   But I tell you, that quad core Atom with a SSD drive and maxed out on ram really moves after I optimized it for those additions.   A GREAT machine for the price.

I know this is an old thread but I have found a solution to the problem. If you cover one of the pins with tape it stops the card being turned off.

Using an Intel 7260 card I followed the advice here:

Hope this helps someone. I have 180 ES1-512 laptops that need better cards..
