Got the java installed. Uninstalled (via programs and features, uninstall) and then downloaded and installed yahoo messenger. Same issue. Cannot see sent messages or view messages sent to me, and that message part of screen, can still see through to desktop as shown in the initial post for the chat issues.
How is it, if i uninstalled service pack 1 update that was installed and caused my sound to die, and before doing that the windows info screen showed service pack 2, in computer stats, that I know show service pack 1?
Is there ANY way to get back to before I uninstalled that service pack 1 the other day? At least, though no sound, my Chat programs worked, and the runescape game client worked. A few other things haven't worked since that uninstall as well. Also, how do i get service pack 2 back so that my I.E.9 works? Would service pack 2 override service pack 1? I know even with service pack 2 my sound was still not working, but other stuff worked. This is frustrating but I'll keep trying stuff
.
Thinking outside the box.....assuming we get the chat issues fixed....is there any way to completely bypass say windows sound, and 'add-on' or otherwise create an alternate way to hear sound with Vista? Maybe external sound driver...or something? And would such an option, if possible, cost more than getting a refurbished computer with windows 7? I really don't want to lose my programs that I would with another computer.

The issue you are facing with messenger is due to java scripting setting disabled in internet explorer.
Try the below mentioned steps.
Click the "Tools" menu on your Internet Explorer toolbar and select "Internet Options."
Click the "Security" tab.
Click the Internet (globe) icon and click the "Custom Level" button.
Scroll down to "Scripting."
Enable the following:
* Active scripting
* Allow paste operations via script
* Scripting of Java applets are all enabled
Click the OK button at the bottom of the window.
Note: Restart Yahoo! Messenger and you should start seeing text in your IM windows again.
You can install service pack through windows update in control panel

Opened IE.
Followed the steps. Two of the three items in scripting you mentioned are already enabled. The third one (pasting), I don't see so can't tell if enabled or not. See screenshots below of what I am seeing there. Also a screen shot showing what my I.E. does no matter what Page I try to load. I do know I could not even install I.E. 9 until I got service pack 2.
That's why I had to get service pack 2, once the update to service pack one didn't not allow for I.E. 9 install. Now, as I said, my system info shows service pack 1 again, after I'd uninstalled it the other day. Baffled here.
Below: duckduckgo is my home page and default search engine. No page will load in I.E. I get the same message, the only thing that changes is the name of the page/website, in the message.

Ok, took a long time but finally got service pack 2 downloaded and installed. IE9 now works, as is yahoo messenger and aim messenger
.
Back to the sound issues now that that little detour is over. ![]()
What do you think about my 'outside the box" question. Is that possible?
Also something curious: this menu opens when I click on speaker icon near the date and time.
Why does this show monitor icon rather than speakers icon? I ask because my mom's computer which is a couple years newer, shows this image, but her speakers are located within her monitor. Mine are not. Could that be indicative of the issue?

I am happy to know that you solved the scripting issue and the messengers are working normal like before. The monitor icon indicates the HGMI connection your mom’s monitor might have a HDMI input where the video and sound goes through the same cable. You can go for a USB sound card which can be plugged to the USB port of the computer. Windows is not able to recognize the sound card properly in the computer. It might be a software issue as you have lots of works to be saved I do not recommend recovery. You can go for an external sound card for the computer.
I was not able to view the picture you attached. It shows a triagle over the place of picture.
Do you have HDMI port on your computer?

Reattached images. Let me know if they still do not display correctly.
I have absolutely NO clue how i have an hdmi port..if I do! I've always had external speakers (plug and play) and used the sound that came with this computer. The only thing I know absolutely is that when I did that service pack 1 update on march 8th, bang, from that moment on, no sound whatsoever on my computer
.
Used to be a different icon before the issues began if I recall directly.
Updated device manager screen shot:
-------
I was thinking. Since back in post number 24 i think it was, you thought it was x64 rather than x32 bit, perhaps the download I did based on that was the wrong one? Is there one for x32?
Also, what would be involved in an external sound card, as far as installation, cost, etc. Is it complicated to do? I'm very good at doing computer things if I know exactly what I need to get and had thorough directions on how to install, etc.
I Do have a lot of data on my computer (to me anyways) but this no sound is a huge issue for me, so I need to resolve it one way or another, and sooner rather than later. Cost is a concern though. I've seen refurbished computers with windows 7, on Amazon in the range of $100, but am hesitant. That's about all i can swing though. In stores, it's all Windows 8 now
.
Same questions about usb sound card as about the external sound card (if they are different).
Thanks once again for you patience and help ![]()

USB sound cards are easy to install, just plug it to the USB port of the computer and connect the speakers to them. The cost can range from low to high depending on the features and brand you go for. You can research online to find more about USB sound cards (price and features). Do not think of going for a new PC your computer is a good one. No need to invest money on a new computer now. It will take some time for the picture to be visible.

So the computer will automatically detect and use the USB audio device? No installation? It will allow me to hear anything on my computer that easily?
What did you mean by the picture taking time to show?
I've priced some USB sound card devices online, and the prices aren't bad, but I'm not sure which device is best for this computer...that kind of stuff baffles me because there are so many choices, and I don't want to end up with a device that won't work. I do not need top of the line stuff. Only something that will allow me to enjoy all my audio related activities, games, chats, etc. However, if at this point and external device is the likeliest and easiest solution remaining, I'd like to go that route. We have certainly tried a number of things via your suggestions and advice
