eMachines ET1331-40e built in card reader not functioning

I have windows 7 home premium 64 bit SP1

Seems that after last weeks MS updates looks like my 8 in 1 (???)card reader is not working. USB ports on front work. I checked device manager and under Universal Serial bus Controllers there is an Unknown device with an exclamtion point. I tried looking for new drivers and uninstalling and reininstalling but niether of those worked.

I did add a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse adapter prior, but I don't think that is the problem.

How do I get my built in card reader back online and working?

Thank you, but it has been my experience that rollbacks after windows updates are extremely rare and rarely needed.

That should only be done in cases of extreme emergency, ex. PC is locking up or you suspect you have a virus (which a rollback may or may not help with that).

My problem was solved in a easier fashion:

    1) Turn off PC and unplug power cord.

    2) Open PC and look for cord behind built in card reader. Follow it to motherboard and unplug. NOTE: Take a close look at the orientation of the plug AND the pins. I didn't realize that mine had 2 rows of pins and that my plug only worked in the lower row.

    3) Leaving card reader unplugged, plug PC cord and turn back on.

    4) Turn off PC and unplug.

    5) Plug in built in card reader to motherboard. Plug in PC cord and turn on PC

    6) Check device manager> universal serial bus controllers You should now not have any question marks or exclamation points. Check Portable Devices. You should see all the respective drives for each card built reader function.

Basically by unplugging and re plugging the card reader you give windows a chance to lose and re-look for the proper driver. For some reason deleting the driver and searching for new driver did not work for me, but the above steps did work.

Did you attempt to roll back the updates that apparantly made it stop working?

No. Would I need to roll back any Windows Updates at all?

You would roll back ALL of the Windows Updates that occured when you believe it stopped working.

If it works after the roll back, then you could say that it was one of the updates that caused it to cease working.
