acer aspire laptop will not charge

I have an Acer Aspire 5532. We lost the charger for it and have been using a charger that belongs to our Asus. The ports are the same and the charger fit. Now, the laptop will not turn on and the battery will not charge. Is it possible that the charger did something to the laptop because it isn't the correct charger? The volts on the charger are 19 and the Acer battery is 10.8 and the other battery we have is 11.1.

There isn't anything else wrong with the laptop that we know of.

Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated.

When attempting to find a proper AC adapter for a product, the required voltage and amperage are clearly marked on the device and on the AC adapter.

Generally you will find something like the following:

    19V  3.42A

This indicates that the system would need an adapter that provides 19 volts at 3.42 amps.

If you have attached another adapter not meant for the system and not providing the proper voltage / amperage, then it is possible that damage may have occurred.

We would suggest contacting technical support in your region for further assistance with this issue.

I also have an Acer Aspire that will not charge; it is model S3 notebook. However, I did not lose the adapter nor have I tried to use any other adapter. The unit stopped working off the power plug and when the battery depleted everything just went dark. An Acer online advisor told me to ship the whole unit in. I just got it back today and it still does not work off the power adapter and the battery which was obviously recharged in the repair shop using some other power source is depleting again, soon to put me out of business again. Repair note that came back said "replaced DC power cord", which I dont understand as I know it is an AC power cord, not DC but the two-part cable looked like the same old (presumably malfunctioning) one so maybe somebody forgot to put a new cable in the return box...did another chat with Acer Support & have been promised another adapter on its way to me. Since the unit works fine off the battery (until it depletes) but cable does nothing, would you agree that it is the cable at fault and not some internal power part?? That seems to be what the tech assumed in the Acer repair shop.

Just FYI there is online an Acer Store (you need to click around this neighborhood) where you can find the adapter that you need for your particular unit. Unfortunately, they are cataloged by wattage, so you will have to do a simple math calculation to figure out what wattage adapter you need.

My Aspire S3 shows 19v  and 3.42a on both the computer and the adapter. The formula for wattage is V x A = W, so if you multiply 19x3.42 you get 65 watts (rounded out decimals). Surely enough, the Acer Store Catalog shows FOUR adapters that produce 65W; I dont know if that means they all would work or not; why would they make four adapters that all do the same thing?

Anyway I am currently awaiting receipt of an adapter from Acer under warranty so maybe I'll get to see which one it is then.

Also, I can confirm AcerTommy's comment, from my own old experience that if you plugged in an adapter with too high a voltage you quite likely damaged the unit; if you plugged in an adapter with too low a voltage, nothing would have happened.

You can also search on the Acer Store by your system model.
