You will need to restore the system to factory defaults, then upgrade from the Windows Store.

(groan) Alpine, you aren't going to like this.
Windows 8.1 is a complete operating system, not an upgrade. Microsoft calls it an upgrade for tax purposes. Depending on how you installed it, you might have deleted your recovery files. You also deleted your Acer drivers.
But all is not lost. Were you using Windows 8 before you upgraded? Then get the drivers for your laptop from the Acer site and PROBABLY they will work well with Windows 8.1.
