What does battery charge flashing green mean?

I have an Aspire 3000 into which I installed a replacement battery. I also upgraded it to 2GB. Works fine with the power adapter, but the charging indicator starts solid amber, then switches to blinking green and the battery does not seem to charge. Windows XP shows the battery is at 0% and with a red cross over it in the Power control panel. ??? I cannot find any indication or documentation of the meaning of a flashing green battery charging indicator....
