With all the other issues I have seen (power/battery connection issues, etc...) I dont feel like I will ever trust this laptop, even if I DO eventually get one that works correctly out of the box.
I just wish Acer would give us the option of exchanging it for a different model.
At this point, I really wish I could get the $1,000 back and buy another brand, or at least ship it back and let me get a different Acer, providing they have a different model in the same price range that is not riddled with issues like the R7.
I regret dealing with acer support instead of just taking it back to best buy and getting something that works properly for 1/3 the price.
I'm sure my facebook friends are tired of seeing my complaints. Hopefully they will remember my experience when shopping for a computer.

You have the same experience as many other people with this machine. The concept was great, the price was great too. The performance not so great, but the customer service horrendous.
I had told many people who purchase computer for large companies and the Government to never choose Acer. Since this machine was unique with the hinge I gave it a try, depsite the warnings about the space bar, power, and WIFI.
I thought I could fix those things, and if I could not, I thought Acer would. I do like the small portion of people who have got work arounds at their own expense posting. I also like those who shipped it back, at their own expense, posting as well.
Everyone has to share their experience and Acer has to get a little credit for allowing this thread to stay up so long, even though it paints them as a terrible company.
Sony is coming out with something very similar in the next week, so hopefully they will have done a better job. We have bought products from any other companies. I have never seen one that denies the issue, then does not fix it while making the customer ship it back at their own expense.
Open box items for this model are numerous at Best Buys throughout the country. Look for a price drop after Thanksgiving as they try to clear the shelves of this. Unfortunately the consumers who get those "great deals" will still have the same problems.

I know how you feel - I took a chance, and return my R7 for the 3rd time - Even though it was pass the 15 day return policy at Best Buy - I spoke with the manager, and convince him that the Geek Squad could not fix the issues going on with these laptops, and being an old techie, I could probably do a better job than the Geek Squad. He agreed to let me exchange it one more time with the promise (finger's crossed) that if the replacement has a issue I'll deal directly with Acer. Dare I say it - knock on wood; two times - I have no issues with the replacement - space bar works fine, no shutdown, wireless connection is 55 mbpps 15 feet from the router, and from the farther distance in the house it's 25 mbps which is exceptable. This is with the OEM wireless card - I ordered a 7620 which should be here today. Granted it's only been a week - but that's longer than the first 2 without an issue.
Like you, I'm still walking on egg shells - with all the issues with this laptop - it just feels like it's a matter of time before you see me posting - Broke Again! I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop... It shouldn't be this way with a new product.. But it is..
Sorry Guys, but I wouldn't expect Acer to do anything about our messages posted here - there's a bean counter in the back room telling the Board - "Don't worry it's going be alright - just let me handle it" - "Best way to handle this is not to acknowledge anything" - "Don't worry eventually the fireworks will die down and they will forget what happened with the first R7". Sad part is WE will when their 2nd R7xx model is released looking cool and sexy as this one did except all the problems will be fixed. (Thank you all for your feedback) It's just going cost you another grand.
BTW: Thanks for beta testing our 1st model, which has been discontinued and now on sale in our for a Limited Time Only Inventory Clearance Sale for only $350 - that's over a 60% savings. Thank you...thank you very much...
We are such Lambs being led to the...lol

Unfortunately some of us can't afford to suck it up and drop another grand on a new machine.
Even if the new model was $350 it still wouldnt be an option for me at this point.

Hated to do it, but I love the machine so much (except for the wifi and the spacebar issue, although I have gotten used to the spacebar)I sprung for a netgear A6200 wifi adapter. Now getting 21+ mbps download speed, which is about the same or a little better than I was getting with my desktop that just bought the farm the other day. Still wish Acer had done the right thing and recalled all of the units and either sent us new ones or fixed the problem.

Here's my problem now, I upgraded the wifi card with the Intel 7260, 500GB HD with 960 GB SSD, and added 8GB of Ram for total of 12 GB I got my drivers, and made a recovery USB disk before hand. When I booted up from my USB, and got to the screen right before it was ready to create new partition and install the OS - it gave an error that it couldn't detect System Drive. Messed around some trying different options, and also seen a message that the drive was locked? I'm thinking this is happening because I installed the SSD drive straight from the box without initializing, making a simple drive and formatting it. So, there's a command prompt option that I used to go into DISKPART mode, and was trying to initialized it from there which I couldn't do. Somebody suggested I try by cleaning, creating partition, and del partition which should initialize the disk. It sees the drive, and it's online, but still getting same error. What you think?

Thank you for the example of the space bar problem. I use a remote keyboard when at home in the 'desk' slot. I did not know what 'space bar problem' was. Thank you for the clearcut example.

I downloaded and installed W8.1 and had several issues, some have cleared up, others have not.
Biggest two are:
1) iPhone 4s will not finish a sync and it leaves 3 processes* running that take up 100% of the CPU, even after you kill the sync and terminate iTunes. I have to reboot. (*SyncSrv, distnoted (2 copies) and Mobile Device) Apple support is working on it. Two uninstalls and reinstalls of iTunes has not helped.
2) I had a Belkin Mobile Hub installed in one of the USB 3.0 ports and it actually damaged the hub. (Yes I saw the other thread about downloading a virtual driver that allows connection/device SHARING with other computers once installed.) If I attempt to plug it in now, it causes a Windows Explorer (main disk interface) exception. The DVD that was installed via the hub works fine when directly connected to the computer.
Originally during the install, it declared that the Kaspersky IE add-ons were incompatible with W8.1 and disabled the. After resolving another issue with the Kaspersky software and the new EPM mode for IE11, they are working fine, now.

Resolved: I converted the drive to GPT - and was able to run the recovery USB - Everything is working, and I'm enjoying my Acer Aspire R7.
Note: I'm not so sure it's a wifi card issue, as much as a different router. Since upgrading my router, and getting the free Blast internet from Comcast - I'm seeing 57.65 Mbps, and my wife who didn't have a problem with her R7 since day one is getting 55 Mbpps. Like I said everything is working as it should. I've upgraded the ram to 12 GB, HD to a SSSD and a new 7620 wifi card.
BTW: Anybody got the story on the recovery 24Gb HD - is that SSD? Now that I've created a recovery USB, can I reformat that drive, and use it as a scratch VM (virtual memory) drive?

Partial fix
Ok with original acer half mini wiff was running 5mps down and 9mps up
REPLACED WTH NEW wireless_16.1.5_s64 Intel7260
It now runs at 15mps down and 26mps up an obvious boost with a $30 new card.
But when I put back my external usb d link wireluyess is rns at 38mps down and 28 mps up.
New card help range and speed a little but not enough. So Clearly the problem is the internal antena. It just plain sucks
hope this helps. Im at a lose.
