Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

before you get your hopes all up

I downloaded windows eight and i have all kinds of bugs

to numerous to mention

I would not download it yet

My keyboard now goes on and off

all my settings are rearranged

the fan runs constantly now and the hard drive makes an awful noise

I still only get 5 mbps

with the adaptor IM getting 63

i dont mind this at all  The adaptor is a no brainer

also my keyboard is now wackos

do not download 8.1

This is a mess

Its a combintion of incapatibilities

since the adaptor works great

I blame a faulty wifi card

:smileysad:  It seems to get worse

yikes

Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

I updated to 8.1 yesterday and have had NO issues. I have not tried wifi since updating though (been using an Ethernet adapter) so I can't comment on improved wifi performance. No keyboard issues or fan problems. In fact, everything on 8.1 seems a little more "zippy", but that could me my imagination.

Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

UPDATE  ON WINDOWS 8.1

Beware

I downlooaded this and it changed all my settings

My PC was tweaked and I am so sorry

There is no real improvement

Actually there are more bugs now then before

I did get a slight improvement in wifi from 1 to 5

My adapter gets 50 to 60

IAnyone that buys this needs a service plan

why fiddle around and fix something you just bought and discover its only worse

Just my 2 cents

Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

OK. dont understand how they can build a $900 laptop with a $5 wireless card.  But at least the support sucks.  I ran the r7 with a dlink usb wifi card and got 28mps perfromance compared to 5mps without it.  so I dished out $30 for the new intel 720 card.  let you know how it works..  Maybe acer will reinburse lol

Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

After reading this thread (well, most of it), I decided to forgo trying to deal with the poor WiFi on the R7. I went with a USB wireless adapter (TP-LINK micro adpater) and works great.  I hate the fact that I lose a USB port, but I've got a small hub I carry around with me anways, so no harm no foul.

Win8.1 Does introduce and or reset some drivers on he R7.  The wireless after the driver update does help, but marginally.  The Bluetooth driver will need to be updated / reinstalled from Device Manager (click the update button) as something in the system registry for this driver may get corrupeted.   The Display settings needs to be changed for the Display scaling.

Overall Win 8.1 has introduced some problems, fix a few, but in genral, other than the useless "start button" that people can't seem to live without, not much impact on this end.

Best of Luck to all on Win 8.1.

Rememer, there's always Windows 3.1

Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

[ Editado ]

For what it's worth, I feel like there are enough improvements to make 8.1 worth while. Keep in mind, this isn't a completely new OS and it's free... So don't expect too much, this isn't windows 9 (and it's not supposed to be)
I LOVE the new search functionality in 8.1. I always hated that when you did a search, you had to click headings to switch between searching for files, apps, and settings.
Now files, apps, settings, and bits of online content are aggragated together. It is pretty nice.

I also like the fact that new apps are not automatically added to the start screen. The slideshow lock screen is also a nice feature. The improvements to the Mail app were MUCH NEEDED (although I still wish I could sort by sender). The ability to resize the modern apps running side by side to whatever size you want is also a needed improvement.

I think I had to change a few settings, but I dont remember what they were. Seems like the display scaling or something had to be changed. Nothing major though.

Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

I called Acer customer service and immediately was put to a level 2 tech.  He authorized "the fix" and sent me a Acer-paid lable to FedEx it back to them.  Recieved it a few days ago.  The Fix .... ISN'T.   So within a few minutes of calling again, they authorized a completely new computer.  The problem is, now one can seem to tell me what is different about the new computer.  The tech (who seems to know only about arrainging shipping etc) said that he heard is was a completely different board.  I asked if it was the new Haswell-powered version.  He couldn't tell me.

Does anyone know what this new laptop has that supposedly fixes the problem?

Am I just participating in a exercise in futility?
