Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

I  Love this thing  By the way what ia it?

The Starship Enterprise

Never looked at an Acer. Always thought they made inferior products\They almost hit a homerun

and they want everyone to think this is a limited problem

I will say that I thinkeveryone has a WIFI problem and I figured out why

This has been quite a mystery and adventure.

The reason that they havent fixed it is because they cant

Either they will to scrap it or a new model will come out soon.

But they have to wait a while till the smole clears

Anyone that is smart will pop for the 160 bucks and get one year coverage at best buy

which covers accidents and the works  Fix or replace.

First the GOOD

The display and resolution are beautiful

Vivid and lush colors   The best ive seen

Very easy on the eyes

This is apussycat

Makes no noise at all

Runs cool and quiet   Have to love it

The keyboard works great  Full size and backlit

Easy on the eyes Best keyboard I have used in a long time

All this time I thought it was me

The sound for a laptop /hybrid  What is this thing?  The sound is terrific

The best ive heard on a laptop

The construction is excellent and well built   To well built   Thats the WIFI problem

Aluminum and full glass display with just the right amout of tint to reduce glare

Finally a unique device made for a touchscreen

I love the positions and the ezel hinge  It really does look like the Enterprise

The cost: IBest buy is selling this for 899.99 and giving  50 dollar gift card  with it

Take a look at the junk for this price

This is not for gamers but for having fun and general computing its a winner

NOW for the bad

Like everyone else here I immediately noticed as I was on you tube

it started buffering. I did a speed test and got 1-2 mbps

Everything else was 20-30

Called tech support Very little help  I actually knew more then they did

If you took the book away  They would be lost

I went to the download sight and downloaded all the new drivers\qnd did notice an improvement

in the WIFI and the Audio

Now why cant this WIFI be fixed  Im not sure It can be in this heavy aluminum box

Its alot more then just a card or an antenna  I havent seen anyone that realyl had an improvement

I think I know what the problem is after carefully speaking to tech support

The Geek squad and friends

This heavy aluminum solid box retards the signal  I am almost sure of it

It is not a simple fix

They will either replace this I suppose or scrap it  I could be wrong  But I believe this is what it is

So get the insurance on this and they have to fix or replace it

And in the mean while do what I did  Go back to your favorite store and get

a n900 dual band WIFI adaptor  It will set you back about 60 bucks

Dont be cheap  Its important to get a good one

Run the cd   I have aportable USB CD\

Plug it in  It even has a cradle with a cord

it will show up in your window as WIFI 2   Click on it

Your speeds will dramatically improve

\Im running between 20-40 now  UPLOAD AT 5.91

Now your good to go until acer comes up with a fix

They have to

You can whine ,cry  and send this back a million times

and i will still be the same  To much metal between the card and the box

The signal just just wont get out

Use the adaptor. It works fine

I dont know why but I was thinking about getting xrays and how they used to put that lead thing on your

chest to block the radiation   I think thats what this metal box does to the WIFI

Come on Acer  We need a fix  You will have to come up with a solution sooner or later

Time isnt on your side

You have a great idea

Now make it a little better

Go for the homerun   Ill pay a few bucks more

I really do love this thing

What is it anyway

Hope this helps

TB

I also think it's driver related. I mean, the antennas are behind the display, right? So the signal gets to them for sure.

Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

As long as you have an external network adapter in, everything works perfectly. It will do the trick until Acer officially recognizes the problem and comes out with a fix.

Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

Last Sunday I was about to go run grab R7, glad I read the reviews and stopped.

Now the weekend is already here and there is no real solution to this issue and no comments guidelines from Acer.

If I go buy R7, I probably will get some used CRAP unit returned by customers. Adios Acer see you in next century.

Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

But it's troublesome and for a 1000$ laptop, we shouldn't need an external network adapter. And on the official Acer site it says nothing about this problem, why would they take so long to acknowledge it when it's clearly a widespread issue?

Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

[ Editado ]

I purchased mine on Monday, spent the next 3 days trying to fix the WIFI (see posts above). Tried everything within my techincal grasp and as I turned it on this morning the WIFI was still at a trusty 5.5 Mbps about 12 feet from the router (every other laptop connects at 150 Mbps).

I had 11 more days to decide, but after the lack of communication from Acer here and the fact that Acer support told me the only solution was to ship it back, I made the long drive of shame back to Best Buy for a refund. But, wait, there's more!

Best Buy took 10 minutes to figure out how to do the refund because of the $50 gift card. Ultimately, they could not return the gift card, so I have a $50 bill now for a "gift" card I never even asked for. Not a big deal, except it was just another slap in the face in the while process. And obviously that is not Acer's fault (directly).

I then went to the laptop section and tested the laptops, including the R7. Every one connected at 54 Mbps and obviously their speed was much less then that. If I could have gotten the R7 to connect at 54Mbps, I would still have it.

Of course, I could have sat right next to the router, NOT! or

Got a WIFI plug-in extender, NOT! or

Got a USB WIFI adapter which would take up one of the 3 ports and stick out, NOT! or

Sent it back, waited 10 days and got the same problem with no opportunity for a full refund. NOT!

I actually recommend more people to buy this unit and take it home and try it. Despite what Acer says about a small percentage, I have yet to read about one working right out of the box in this country.

Please share your Acer success stories here. As for me, Acer once again is a "DO NOT BUY" recommendation!

Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

Sorrt to hear about all your hassles njcurveball. Like you, I have been wanting to get the R7, but keep hoping that Acer will do the right thing and replace the defective models at Best Buy and make some type of public statement. Obviously, they are just keeping a low profile and seem to be hoping that enough consumers buy the R7 and never notice the crappy WiFi connections. I do have to wonder about Best Buy's role in all this. They have to be noticing the very high level of returns and complaints about the R7, so perhaps they can pressure Acer to give them a version that actually works.

For me, I am just going to keep waiting for a diffferent model # to show up at the Best Buy site, indicating a new version has been released. I realize that a USB WiFi card might make this functional, but to me this would be like buying a new car and then have to buy an aftermarket ignition system just to start it in the morning. Not an attractive proposition....
