Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

I'm pretty sure TwelveTone works for Acer...just sayin

That's not a helpful remark. Did you notice him bad mouth Best Buy, Acer's exclusive partner in selling this laptop? Do you think their representatives would do that?

It sounds like he sent in his laptop worried it'd never work right, they fixed it, and he's happy... I don't think accusing him of being some sort of spy is respectful or reasonable.

Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

Hello all, me again.

This time with a brand new Acer Aspire R7 which I just got exchanged at best buy today. Guess what. Same problem. Oh, and also theres a dead pixel on this one, so I will be exchanging it for that as well. An interesting side note, by the way.

Alright so the first R7 that I brought home yesterday had the same wifi functionality problems that everyone else has been having. However, when I brought it in to best buy to get it exchanged, I did a quick internet speed test on it and compared it to the other 2 R7's that we on display. Oddly enough, my R7 won out with the highest connection speed out of all of the other R7's on display. (Which, mind you were acheiving speeds of 11 mps download, whereas mine was getting around  13 mps per second download.) So I asked the store clerk where the router was and he pointed up to the ceiling. A ceiling which was 30 feet away from us. So that means that 30 feet awa from the router I was getting better speeds that both the other R7's, and well as getting better speeds than other laptops such as the Dell XPS 12.

Anyways, all that aside, I did still end up getting my exchange. However, before I got the exchange done, I did a quick test of it at the store, and at the best buy store it worked perfectly as well, I asked the store clerk what frequency they were using and he responded with "dual band". He was unable to provide me with the name of their service provider.

Anyways, taking this as a good sign, I brought the computer home only to be let down by obtaining the same problems that I had with the earlier model. (Plus that pesky dead pixel I mentioned earlier) Quick question for y'all by the way. I've only been getting a hold of models using the Broadcom wifi card, so I've been wondering if perhaps the Atheros wifi card has fared any better through al of these wifi issues? If anyone could get back to me on that, well, it would be wonderful.

Ah, yes, and also, one more thing. I have pretty much fallen in love with this device one way or another, as such even if it means getting an external nano USB wifi adapter, and keeping it in 24/7 to make the wifi work, I would be willing to do that if it meant I get to keep this computer. However as I said earlier if the Athero's wifi card models are functional then I would love to get one of those instead.

However, despite all this I just wanted to ask if the nano usb wifi adapter that was recommened on this thread a few pages back has worked for anyone else? If so then I will probably end up going to buy it. Also, twelve tone, how exaclty abouts did you go and get a working R7? Specifics please?

Anywho, will update you once I'm back from the store again tomorrow replacing this model due to the dead pixel, (and perhaps with luck I'll get one with working wifi) but otherwise if y'all could get back to me regarding the nano usb wifi drive, and the athero's wifi card, that would be great.

Get back to y'all tomorrow.

[ Editado ]

The solution to the problem is NOT returning the devices at least 2 times to BestBuy and be another person who posts that it didn't work here but sending in your device with bad wifi to Acer who fix it within a week.

So stop doing the same  mistake for weeks and just do what Acer says. It takes time to change the production of the R7 and exchange all the devices they sell worldwide.

And no one ever said it's the internal wifi adapter. Acer_cory said it's a complex and not easy to find problem, that's why it took so long. It could for example be because of the magnets in the device or whatsoever, not important, just send in your device and stop doing the sameaction over and over again and wondering why it doesn't work...

You're right. It will take too much time for them to get this right.  I'm just taking it back to get a full refund today.  Screw it I’m not going to send mine it for them to open up a brand new laptop and fix it…that’s ridiculous!  I'll wait another 6 months or a year to replace my old HP laptop.  By then I'm sure a lot of other more reputable manufacturers will have competing devices with more capability for less money and Windows 8 will mature a lot. Hopefully Acer will as well.

Betreff: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

Today I contacted the Acer support in the Netherlands about the same wifi issue. They said I can return my R7 for repair free of charge. I decided to do that. They will test the wifi connection at different distances and they will maybe replace the wifi adapter. Another thing I noticed is that the internetspeed (speedtest.net) is much slower in tablet mode than it is in notebook mode. However the upload speed remains the same at all distances. When I've my R7 back I will post my findings.

Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

I wish I found this topic earlier, I also bought the Acer Aspire R7-571G, with the same problem. But I also fell in love with this notebook.
Today I'm returning it to bcc (a Dutch shop), they will send it to Acer and hopefully it will be fixed after....
I hope twelve tone and Acer are right...
I'll keep you guys posted :/

Thomqa. I noticed BCC to read this thread and romove the R7 from the shelves till the wifi problem is solved.
Apparantly they have not done that.

Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

I originally posted back in June and have just been following along. I finally got frustrated moving my wifi Extender from room to room with me and following Acer-Cory and Twelve Tones lead called Acer support a few minutes ago.

I only had to briefly explain my situation and mention this forum to Tabatha. She put me on hold for about 3 minutes before getting back on and telling me she was authorized to send me a new unit. I opted for the option to put the new unit $ on hold on my credit card so they will send it right away and then release it when I send back the defective unit.

I did ask if Tabatha was aware of what the fix was and she said she was not.

I will post the results.

(I am not comfortable taking apart the laptop - otherwise I could take before and after shots of the wifi card to see if that changes.)

Is there a way to do a system check to see what the card is?

@PBert,

If you go into the device manager in the control panel, and the go to the network adapter dropdown box, it will tell you the name of the card. (Broadcom, atheros, etc etc)

Thanks 007Timex, once I receive the new unit I will get that information from both machines and post it.
