Aspire "encountered hard disk problem" and now is painstakingly slow

Hello! I have an Acer Aspire V5-531-4636 purchased in late July that is having some problems. A few months ago (around December) I got an error dialog that read, "Windows has encountered a hard disk problem. Start back-up process now?" It indicated that the C: drive was having a problem. I clicked the option to start the back-up process later and restarted the computer. The dialog did not reappear again. However, on Tuesday of this week the same dialog popped up. I decided to run an AVG computer scan to see if there was a virus/threat. In the middle of the scan, my screen went black and I was forced to shut it down and restart it. Ever since then, my computer will not even open a program without taking half an hour. Sometimes if I restart the computer, it will work with one simple program (e.g. one tab open in Google Chrome) for awhile, but if put into sleep mode, it will not restart at normal speeds. In conclusion, my computer has become pretty much nonfunctional and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of what to do or if this really is a hard disk problem and my C: drive should be replaced.

Thanks everyone!

    Hi

when windows is running open task manager and see what processes are running, and what if anything is using resources.

open task manager > right click the taskbar.

also try running MSCONFIG from the run command, the tab labelled startup controls what loads at first boot, there may be something in there, untick them all and reboot, then add each one back until you find out what if anything is causing the issue.

lastly dump AVG in itself its a resource hogger and is fairly low in my estimation of virus progs, try avast free edition, and also download malwarebytes anti malware and run a scan with it, there are lots of help forums you can use to interpret the results
