Does your computer have a motherboard speaker? In other words, did your computer beep when it used to boot? What does it do now?

You can try reseting the BIOS by taking out the CMOS battery (circular battery on the motherboard), then booting up your computer. Make sure the computer is unplugged when interacting with the motherboard!

Which version of Microsoft Office were you trying to install?

If you are installing it from a DVD, all you need to do is remove the DVD, then reinsert it. This should re-initialize the installation process.

If you're talking about Windows Live Essentials, I don't think it was updated. What operating system do you have?

Most of what it offers (besides Windows Movie Maker) is already technically included with Windows 8.

Please be more specific as to why it won't work.

Does it power on, but is not recognized by the operating system? Is it recognized, but does not read any discs?

Perhaps you need driver software for both?

I don't think deleting any drivers was absolutely necessary... When I installed my ATI Radeon HD5450, all I had to do was go into the BIOS, choose "PCI-E" as the default video source, and my PC immediately used the ATI as the default video source. Windows kept the drivers for the integrated NVIDIA, but also automatically installed the drivers for my ATI.

For visible speed, I found that upgrading the RAM was the best option, although I would highly recommend getting a new PC. That CPU and other hardware are up to five years old, and a lot of newer, faster, more versatile tech have come out since then. When upgrading, I would also advise Intel, as they tend to have higher benchmarks and compatibility.

According to that page, your sister should have built-in wireless, but that all depends on her model. It could be that she hasn't attached the antenna to the port yet, or she got unlucky with an Ethernet model... Either way, a good first step would be to ask her if her Acer PC came with an antenna, and if so, ask her to attach it to the appropriate port in the back of the PC.

One of two things could have happened:

You didn't shut down the PC correctly, and now your hard drive is corrupted.
Your Master Boot Record is probably broken, also probably due to incorrect shutdown.
