Unfortunately the only thing you can do now is reload the computer with another disc, you can probably contact acer with your computer serial number with who purchased it and when, they may issue you a new recovery disc, probably at a price. The thing is that the password is there to protect you, if they just gave a new recovery disc to anybody, computer thefts would multiply out off all proportion. Sorry can't be any further help on this. Good luck

Dont know if this will work but you can reboot your comp, when you see the acer sign hold alt and keep pressing f10 until screen changes. You may still require a password, I'm not sure. Please come back to me, if fails will try to find a solution for you

How very frustrating, dont think I've seen this problem before, but never mind, will see if we can fix it.

Go to control panel, click on keyboard, select hardware tab, this will tell you if the hardware is running properly. If ok go back to control panel. open hardware and sound, select device manager, if prompted press continue. Look for keyboard on list and click on the + sign next to it. Double click the file that lists your keyboard, does it say the device is working properly. Click on the driver tab and select uninstall, after this your keyboard will stop working totally, restart computer, when on your computer will find the keyboard and reinstall it. See if this sorts out your problem.

I take it you mean your fan is constantly running at full speed and that this is a new problem?

If so sounds like you need to open your computer, and clean it, pay particular attention to the slots behind the fan, try this and see what happens, also make sure your vents on the outside of the comp are clean, they soon get blocked, particularly if you have pets

Glad to hear it, for future reference, I had a similar problem where my system was corrupted and my cdrom had stopped working, so I couldn't use my recovery discs. Fortunately I had backed up my system and so was able to use hold alt button and keep pressing F10 which takes you to system restore and gives you the option of resetting to factory conditions or resetting from back up which keeps all your files. Might be useful to know if you have any further problems

So pleased you got sorted

What exactly comes on when you start your computer, does it come up with the acer logo, is the computer itself an acer. If the place you bought it from did a clean boot using another cd, this effectively wiped out all acer back up info.

Hi, Yes you can reinstall vista without discs, you would lose everything, as it resets back to factory condition. but you can then udate to present time. Save everything you want to keep on discs prior to doing this. If you still got e-recovery on board, use this, if you cant find it, go to computer, programme files, Acer and you should find e-recovery there

In doing so it does not erase your whole disc, it keeps your former settings in a file. When I went through program files I found Acers e-recovery.

How do you you know they're out of date, did you maybe go on a website that told you they were out of date in order to buy their product. Drivers very rarely go out of date, they are usually updated. If you go to task manager, click on the hardware that you think the drivers may be out of date, open cascade and double click on a driver which opens a new box, that will tell you if your driver is workin correctly, if you want to check if there is a newer version, then click the driver tab and select upgrade driver. Do this for all the drivers that you think are out of date, Windows update will then keep them all up to date, good luck.

If you are thinking of upgrading an older machine to windows 8, can I suggest that if you do, buy the access key and download it. I upgraded vista to windows 8 and frankly had quite a few problems, eventually accepting that vista was a lot better than windows 8 on my current set up. Had I bought a disc it would have apparently wiped the whole disc making it nearly impossible to revert back to vista. Because I downloaded windows 8, in the program files I found Acer e-recovery and was able to reset my comp back to factory conditions. Hope this helps
