I was told that the small SSD is meant for Fast Boot. Whether replacing Windows with Linux has an effect on that, I do not know. I am not going to take risks without some more information about whether it is okay to use the SSD under Linux. I now also know that the SSD is a SCSI disk. So, in case you would consider replacing it with a larger SSD, take that into account!

Before buying anything, have a good look under the cover! I formatted the HD and installed Linux, which works fine. Today I happened to have a look at Linux' disk tool. That revealed that my V3-771G has in fact a small (4 g.) SSD disk besides the 500 giga HD! Just clicking on 'computer' did not reveal the existence of that SSD. I have not opened the back of my laptop yet, but obviously that small SSD has to be somewhere. I also do not know what Acer has used that SSD for and whether I can safely format it and place the Linux system files on it for a super-fast boot. Anyone who knows about that?

Hi! I did not have the foresight to think about warranty etc. So I formatted the hard disk to remove Windows and installed Linux. By now, I have tried Ubuntu, Mint and at the moment Zorin Linux. All work well. I did notice (using Linux Disk Tools on my AspireV3-771G) that I seem to have a hidden 4 gig SSD. I have asked elsewhere on the forum, whether it is possible to place the Linux system files on it. That way, booting should be very fast indeed! I do not yet know the answer to that question and I fear that I would remove vital Acer files by formatting the SSD disk. The funny thing is that I cannot 'see' the SSD disk by clicking on "Computer" (which should show all disks). Hence my uncertainty. But, to come back to the original question: yes, you can run Linux. It will also not void the warranty, but in case you need help from Acer, they may ask you to go back to Windows.
