Quotes: Try on another PC and install apps one by one...

Before I returned the first unit that originating this discussion I reset the machine to clear all my data and go back to the original settings "out of the box". Re-inserted my sdcard and checked, still could not see it properly, same symptoms, with only the OS and built-in apps, no updates done.

With that same unit, I tried on another PC W7, a laptop W7 and a laptop W8. Same symptoms.

With the new unit after the exchange, I performed the applications restore and all the updates, tried and it was perfect, the way it should be with all the applications, built-in and otherwise. I did so several times and no problems. I went through the trouble of counting and comparing the folders I could see with my backup on the PC. No discrepancies in numbers nor size. That's when I posted saying that it had been fixed. Next day, the dream was over, back to zero... No new updates had been done since.

Install applications one by one? Oh, please! I could do that if I had a way to create an image of the device just like I do with my PC where I use Active@ to create and restore my W7 image and be back to life an a few minutes if a crash occurs. At this stage, I will not reset it and start from the scratch, sorry... Anyone knows how to image an Android and restore when needed? The ammount of updates after a reset is horrifying!

Have a good Father's Day!

*********************************************

Update...

After writing the above, just for fun, I connected the little thing again to my PC...

I have in the the eBooks folder five main folders: True Crime, Classics, Fiction, Horror & Fantasy and No Fiction. The largest folder is Fiction with 321 sub-folders that contains many other sub-folders. As I said, the first time two days ago, I could see all of them including the other main folders.

Yesterday I could see none.

This morning I can see thre main folders out of five and the Fiction displays only 121 sub-folders out of 321. Most probably in another hour this result will be different.

Just so you know...

I agree mate, but USB technology 2.0 has been established and reliable for years. Beats me why this particluar MB presents this bug. It looks like I am the only one suffering from it? Well, I do not need it really at this stage as long as I have the WiFi working...

By the way, how do you mark the messages "as solved" or "geve up"?

Ha!

Sorry guys but it has not been fixed, believe it or not!

Turned it on and connected it this morning to my PC and I can't see even the main folder eBooks anymore. I can see other folders in the sd external but not the one I created and could see yesterday for the first time. And yes, they are there. I can access them using the WiFi...

I give up!

Hi again,

This morning I called Acer again, for the last time I hope, and after explaining the problem again and again, I said that I was going to take the unit back for replacement. They gave me a reference number and off I went to the retailer.

Officeworks just looked at the receipt, the number given by Acer and brought another brand new unit.

i took it home, unpacked, connected the USB cable and voilá! All drivers installed the first time excepting the Android drivers that I installed manually from the Device Manager using the drivers that I downloaded from Acer and they are correct after all. Windows could not find them anywhere.

This time Windows even detected the USB Composite Device and installed the driver correctly. A new entry in Device Manager appeared: Android Tablet/Android Composite ADB Interface.

Yes, the ADB wasn't appearing before and now it is.

Browsing the files, I could see every single folder from the external SD card, more than 500 folders, no problems, the first time.

I believe my problem has been solved replacing the unit but I will not play the trumpets just yet. I am through the process of putting everything that I had back in the unit. I had done an app backup making things easier. Updates are a pain. Will keep you posted if anything changes.

Definitely, the old unit has an issue with the USB related circuitry. Their problem now...

Cheers!

Me again,

I took the little thing to the retailer and they let me to connect to a Windows 8 PC (No Windows 7 anymore). Different PC, different OS, different cable and the same thing happened. W8 sees the device and Explorer displays half the folders. It may be then a hardware problem.

Back to Acer BSs... Will keep you posted.

Cheers!

IronFly wrote:
The strane thing is that Aussie unit has a different HardwareIDs compared to hardwareIDs listed on Acer drivers.
I'm suspecting an hardware problem on his 830 usb controller.

Aussie have you already updated to 4.4.2?

Hi IronFly,

No, I have not. The developer of Moon Reader, the app I use most, warned of a potential problem with KitKat. So far this USB problem is the only one I have and I do not want to do a major OS upgrade right now. After all, it was just born and may not be stable. I'll wait for a while.

Actually when I called Acer right after I purchased the unit and asked about the 4.4.2 the guy said that it is not stable yet...

Cheers!

Yes, it is interesting. There are times when it display 90% of the folders and then won't display any.

Yes, I tried 3 different microUSB cables including the short one that came with the device that I suspected first.

Yes, I tried with the unit on and off. If it is off, just connecting the cable, it starts attempts to install the CLOVERVIEW and Android drivers and after a while, "no drivers found". After booting the device the "Portable Device" A1-830 appears - incomplete...

Yes, I tried as well with/without the charger.

If, as you say, the Microsoft driver is not the (for) Acer then we do not have a proper driver installed what takes us back to point zero...

The processor is an Atom and the driver from Intel should work, theoretically anyway but every manufacturer changes the guts of every machine.

It could be hardware as you suggested. Not the PC I believe as I tried on another PC and also on my laptop (Acer Travelmate) and had the same results. I might, when I get my car back (she's sick being serviced) take the unit to Harvey Norman (the retailer) and see if they allow me to connect it to one of their PCs. Usually they are cleaner than ours at home without "bad habits" and see how it goes...

Hi AcerCore,

Thanks for your reply.

I am not using really any special application. All I do is:

1-Unit is connected via MTP

2-Unit is ON and then connect to the (any) USB port (either 2.0 or 3.0)

3-Windows beeps indicating a new connection and, if the first time or if the device has been uninstalled by me, starts installing the drivers.

4-Fails installing drivers for CLOVERVIEW

5-Fails installing drivers for Android

6-Opening My Computer, Windows Explorer shows that the device A1-830 is hanging in there

7-Clicking on the device A1-830 we can see two items: Internal storage and SD card (my inserted SD card)

8-Opening the SD card it displays the main folders and sub folders. This varies day to day. Sometimes half the folders, sometimes none at all but always incomplete. I use either Windows Explorer or Total Commander. Results are the same.

I tried to install those drivers (CLOVERVIEW and Android) download from Intel site to no avail.

Again, the drivers installed are not Acer drivers, are Microsoft's. Manually Windows does not accept the supplied drivers and insists in saying that it has already the best drivers installed. I know this above is a repetition of the discussed but just to keep the thread alive...

Thanks ironFly,

It was a good try but it did not work. I changed the installation settings to not automatically install the drivers, edited the .INF file and did it manually but still the same. After that, a folder with 249 subfolders would display only 15 subfolders. Every day a different result.

As I said, I use a file manager over the WiFi so I do not need it anymor but I am really curious about the fixing and of course, this would help other users.

Thanks for your efforts.

Cheers!

Hi,

I am curious now... My hardwareID is:

Portable Device: A1-830

Hardware Id Values:

USB\VID_0502&PID_3603&REV_0224

UDB\VID_0502&PID_3603

Driver Provider: Microsoft

Driver Date: 21-Jun-06

Driver Version: 6.1.7600.16385

Driver Signer: Windows

These are installed automatically. I disable the automatic install and tried manually install the Acer drivers, it did not like and returned to the originals state.

Just for the record, the cable is OK.

Keyplr, I assume, must have tried another USB port. Every PC has at least two ports. Most have four. When I asked to uninstall/install the HUB drivers usually this fixes Windows hickups. If not, it may be circuitry in the motherboard itself. It rarely happens but one never knows. I do not think he has a hardware problem.

Breaking News (!): This morning I connected the Acer to the PC and this time I cannot see one folder at all! The Fiction folder disappeared. Before I could see at least half of the sub-folders...

Also, Windows could not install the drivers for CLOVERVIEW! Very weird this behaviour...

Cheers!

I think they don't care at all about this. Maybe they have the perception that because it is a cheap(er) product it does not deserve much attention. If it breaks, they'll replace it and that's all. Maybe I am wrong...

The time I spent on the phone with several members of the so called support last week depresses me. They kept passing the buck to someone else and finally they sent me to an external company that looks after the "out of scope and warranty" (their words) that wanted to charge me for a consultation. I reacted badly and finally a support guy, very professional I'd say, conceded in having a look at what I was talking about and downloaded, opened the ZIP file and analysed it and concluded, "yes, there's something wrong but there's nothing I can do". I emailed Acer back and decided to put an end to the saga.

The interesting thing is that Acer emailed me asking to participate of a "satisfaction" survey. When I clicked the link to the survey, it was not available anymore. He, he, he... I was going to let the dogs out on them but did not have the chance. No further communication re this issue...

You're right but not the folders created by the user. In my case, I have almost 300 folders in the Fiction e Books and I can't see around the half of them if I use the device as Media Device...

Hi,

OK... It seems that we are having the same problem with some variations (see my post below Aussie).

I spent a lot of time dealing with the Acer support and they did not fix the problem. It looks like this tablet does not have the proper drivers for Windows. In my case everything "is working properly" and Windows has "the best driver for my device" (big lie! It is a Microsoft driver dated June 2006). Windows apparently does not like the Acer drivers. I unzipped the file from Acer put them in a folder in drive C:, tried to install them but Windows persists saying the it has already "the best drivers". Even if I stop Windows doing it automatically, it still does not work.

In my case, I can see it in My Computer the Portable Device/A1-830 with 2 entries: the internal sdcard and the external (my card) but when browsing, I cannot see a lot of folders. Somehow Windows misses them. Typical symptom of bad drivers however Acer insists that the device is a "plug and play and Windows will see everything"... Another big lie. At least in my case.

So, do not waste your time. Install the app File Manager Pro V 1.6 (costs only $ 3.00), turn on your WiFi, check the IP address of your PC (run IPCONFIG), enter that address in the File Manager settings and off you go. Fast and secure, better than the USB connection.

There are other options if you want to play a bit. In Google Play there are lots of WiFi File Transfer aps where you can access the tablet from the PC and transfer files between them. Play with Aptoid as well.

I don't think you have a problem with your USB ports. The problem is the tablet...

Cheers!

Hi,

I suggest you open the device Manager and uninstall the USB Hub. Check then for new hardware and Windows will reinstall the drivers. Reboot and see if that fixes the original problem.

Iconia A1-830 and Windows 7 drivers

Hi guys,

I purchased an Iconia A1-830 last month and after setting it up I tried to connect to Windows 7, 64 bits, through the USB port so I could manage my files. I was expecting Windows to see it as a driver (media device set in settings) as almost every other device does instead windows sees it as portable device and the SD Card that I have installed in the tablet with all my ebooks, music, etc. appears as "SDCard" not external SDCard (though it is) and most of the folders and subfolders are missing.

The driver installed by Windows 7 is a Microsoft driver dated June 2006! Acer provides a ZIP file (without setup.exe nor install.exe) with apparently the right drivers for this unit however Windows keeps saying that it has "the best drivers" installed (this performed by the Device Manager).

I have tried everything (including using Device Manager) and Acer support knows nothing about this issue and cannot fix it.

Once in a while, after I connect through the USB port, Windows tries to install the drivers and finishes saying that:

Device driver software was not successfully installed

CLOVERVIEW - No driver found

Android - No driver found

but still can "see" the incomplete folders from the device A1-830. The same happens with an Acer laptop and two different PCs fully up to date.

My solution, for me anyway, was to buy the File Manager Pro app so I could manage my files using WiFi however there is a problem that I would like to fix.

Any suggestions experience with similar problem?

Cheers!
