SOLVED: I don't know if this will help anyone but thought I would post as I thought the wifi dropping and "wifi not in range" chrome OS issues I was having was software related since it was intermitent and would work after a powerwash.

My connection would always work via 5GHz but only work after power wash for a short bit on 2.4 GHz. I got sick of trying to see what the software issue could be so I took the back cover off (yes, I broke the seal of warranty void sticker to get at the last screw) and found that the wifi card had 1 antenna disconnected. I believe it was the white antenna if that matters to anyone. I put the antenna back on the wifi card terminal and it now works great, problem solved.

I hope this helps someone down the road. Opening up the back is a piece of cake and the wifi card has 2 antenna wires going into it: black and white.
