I can't confirm this "experimentally", but I refer you to this page, which states that compatibility is SDXC.

I had much the same wonder! Since it didn't happen for the Christmas market, likely won't happen in the winter/spring "slack market", I'd imagine?

Anyone else heard any rumours about if this is a likely event at any stage?

I can't guarantee this to be true, but elswhere I read that it's an SD*X*C slot. Hence it'd accept anything up to the currently maximum SD-anything, which currently seems to be 128GB.
