Each person has there own preference. Norton and Mcafee are industry leaders. I would be skeptical of free antivirus software because sometimes they can be malicious themselves. I have heard decent things about Avast and it is free, I think.

DION1,

Honestly there is no "best antivirus" as they all provide some type of protection and it comes to personal preference in some cases. Microsoft has a free antivirus software and it has been rated high for several years now. I would recommend trying Microsoft Security Essentials.

Visit http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download to learn more about it.

Go for AVG as your primary antivirus http://free.avg.com/ and Immunet http://www.immunet.com/free/index.html as your secondary antivirus. I have this combination and it works great.
