Installing Linux Distro in dual boot with Windows 8 on ACER E1 510. Trouble with UEFI.

Hello everyone,

I bought an ACER E1 510 with Windows 8.1 .

I would like to install in dual boot LIUX UBUNTU. unfortunately I am having problems with the boot from USB / DVD.

(I followed all the usual steps regarding the procedure for the USB / DVD. I had the supervisor password, I disabled the secure boot)

Nevertheless when on the boot list I choose the start form USB /DVD and I reboot I dont get the required start but the normal one with windows 8.1.

Can anyone help me?

I suggest you seriously consider a virtual Linux machine if you haven't already. I'm currently running a SuSE distro, Win98SE & WinXP as guests on a Win7 host using one of VMWare's freeware players. And each OS communicates with the other thru the network. I find that it's a whole lot easier and better than fooling around the old way with multiboots, bootsticks, partitions, etc.

Since you've gotten this far, I this link might help. It's a 10-step process for creating a dual win8/ubuntu boot. You may already be up to step 8 and only need to run a bootloader repair from your USB or DVD as shown.

I am trying to disable UEFI and use the LEGACY bios but once I do per the 2014 youtube video below; pre-installed Windows 8 will no longer boot.

Did you boot back to the bios after selecting legacy mode to change the boot order?

What should I change the boot order to ? I have not tried installing linux yet because I assumed that if win8 will not start then there will be problems with GRUB/bootloader.

I was going to change it to:

1] CD

2] USB

3] HDD

Where should the “window boot manager” option go ?

Are you booting Win8 from an internal SSD? If not, have you tried HDD as primary just to see if you can boot back to Windows OK?

OK, have you tried the HDD as primary yet just to check if you can get Win8 to boot OK?

Current setup gives me this error message:

“no bootable device”

mode: legacy/BIOS

secure mode: disabled

1] HDD

2] CD

3] USB FDD

4] USB HDD

5] USB CD

6] NETWORK BOOT

Try the UEFI setup again to see if you can get back to square one before we go any further with this.

win8 boots but now you can't boot from USB/CD. It appears acer/gateway users must choose windows or linux but NOT both.

Can you make Win boot mgr primary in the bios setup? If so, you may then have the USB/CD boot option available.

Since the “windows boot manager” option was missing, I attempted to fully restore the CPU to OEM condition.

1] boot to USB restore drive

2] yes – repartition drives

3] fully clean drive

8 hours later . . . . . .

still no windows boot manager option

disabling UEFI, still renders win8 useless

still getting same error message: “no bootable device”

ACE JACK, thank you for all your help but ACER failed us on this one.

If you do a search (upper right corner of this community page) for "dual boot" you'll find how some folks claim to have done it. Maybe it'll help with your situation.

The other option, like I'm doing on my own machine, is running a SuSE distro, Win98 & WinXP as virtuals under Windows using one of VMWare's freeware players mainly for legacy stuff that won't run right or won't run at all under the newer windows.
