Hello People, Once again I have a question for you. I recently order a new HDD for my acer aspire one D257. I also thought I would order a external DVD / CD burner- player for my D257 also. I order the HDD from amazon and the DVD burner from tigerdirect because it was on sale. Well the dvd-cd burner got here today and it was internal not external. I could pay to return it but i would lose half of what it cost. The man suggested i find a USB to SATA converter cable. I see them on amazon. My question is, Can you run it this way? Is there enough power from a notebook? Is it safe for the notebook? I hope things go better when the HDD gets here Friday. Once again thanks for your time and effort..........Ray

if you buy the type of USB-SATA adapters that can be used with 3.5 inch drives and come with a power supply you don't have to worry about how much power is available at the USB port (they only cost about $20). if the drive was made for internal use and the circuit board is exposed you will have to devise some type of protection/enclosure to prevent short circuits. those would be the only serious precautions you would have to take.

as for the HDD replacement, are you upgrading a working drive or is your old drive shot? for this there are lot of posts for how-to do it with full explanations. check them out.
