Aspire M3802 - fan sped at +4000 from start up!

Knowledge Filled Folks - please share your wisdom

This machine is a couple of years old and has been running fine considering it is largly left in thye hands of game playing teenagers.

Now though the CU fan is running constanty at over 4000 revs - irrespective of the cpu temp. Currently CPU temp = 34 degrees - but I can hear myself think!

I noticed it as the kids had the game volume turned up so high to cover the noise up.

I can only assume that although - nobody did it - the bios settings have been disturbed. I have been in to bios to check the fan speed and temps - and the settings look ok there - I have tried active and passive cooling. It all still still show active an speed and the cpu temp / system cooling policy is set to active in the windows power management - and I have reset these settings to factory default and restarted again and again.

Is it possible that a spuriously downloaded game has set the fan speed to max? Will working backwards removing games be a solution? Its hard to see how as the problem occurs from first button push and not when windows starts - it also runs at max in safe mode.

Sad news is thats its on the pc connected to the decent telly which we like to use to run films etc on!

Hello rgmuk,

I guess you cleaned the heatsink with an air duster or a spray duster.

The CPU fan have normally 4 wires:

- 2 wires for the power

- 1 wire for the rotation detector (real speed)

- 1 wire for the frequency generator (pulse wave PWM)

Perhaps your issue comes from the detector (no return signal) and the PWM is to the maximum (4200 RPM).

Herewith, the part numbers of the heatsink with fan for Aspire M3802 (no cheaper):

Ok - so that didn't work so I guess we know it wasn't a hardware problem - well not with the fan at least!

Just running a system restore to see if that helps!

You haven't exactly the same issue than wifikid. Your CPU is to 34°C and not 75°C.

Have you try to do a Clear Cmos with the jumper?

I'm sorry that the new heatsink did'nt solve the issue.

Yes ~ appreciate the difference in the temp but similarly the fan is going to full speed as soon as the machine powers up!

I will give the bios reset a go later today. Actually I have managed to **bleep** up returning to factory reset at the moment as the machine hung during the process and now I can't get the eRecovery to work. That's my first priority now! The system hangs at the wait a moment screen. Using a repair disc the system hangs after selecting the keyboard layout! Not sure where to go next!

Don't worry about the fan - it was worth a try and at least we know its clean! It is slightly quieter!

If you recover your system from erecovery media (CD/DVD), it's necessary to change the first boot device in the bios setup utility.

OK - Searched the house - the only disc that came with the PC is the user manual and something called ADM? There is no recovery discs. The repair disc I made also hangs when booting from it?

I have back up discs I made using system back up in windows - but I guess they are not bootable?

I looked on like for replacement discs from acer - but the website wont recognise my SNID and the email I sent to Acer Support last week has been Ignored.

Any suggestions?

You can recover the system from the hidden partition:

1- See this video: Recover from the hidden partition

2- See Acer support topic: Using Recovery Management outside of Windows

You have two options when you create your backup recovery disks (eRecovery Management):

1- Create a Factory Default Disc (it's exactly same than the recovery media purchased and

it's bootable)

2- Create a Drivers and Applications Disc

Otherwise, you can order eRecovery media by phone or by e-mail to Customer Service:

On the Support tab, search using Keywords: Recovery using CDs or DVDs
Click on the link Customer Service
To send an e-mail click on Customer Care

The other option is to download windows 7 86 or 64 and do a clean instal. But before make shure that you download the driver form acer driver from acer and to do a back up with Windows easy transfer (WET). if you don't have WET on your PC you can get form Microsoft. Also make shure you have Windows Reg. Keys you should find on the ouside.

Here the link for a leagal copy of windows download and burn it to a cd.

Well after three phone calls FROM the Acer team and shelling out a small fortune I now have a set of discs winging their way to me!

They may be here Friday ! The next job will be rebuilding the thing before we think about fixing the original problem - which is hopefully going to be a BIOS issue?

What's the chances!!

i have an Acer with amd cpu to fix a similar problem i just took out the fan and and pass the vaccum in the fins then wipe the fan i clean it with a damp cloth. the compresse personaly is just a waist of money.

for the bios did you try to see if you had an update

but i belive that you have some kind of virus,pup,trojen..... or one of the other

just format it's not that hard check video on youtube

Well the new disks have arrived and guess what!

Yes the erecovrry stops at exactly the same point as the recovery disk I had made!

The computer goes into recovery and hangs at the wait a moment screen just as before ,!

There must be a way to get round this?

Hello rgmuk,

The erecovery doesn't work because you have a hardware or bios issue.

Firstly, make a clear cmos with the jumper. If the fan speed decrease, this is a good sign!

Secondly, you could flashing the bios only under Dos (Aspire M3802 - Bios P01.A1) like this:

To flash the bios with MS-DOS:

1- Make a MS-DOS Bootable USB Flash Drive (see note) with FlashBoot (Demo) or HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool

2- Download the bios file.zip and unzipped it.

3- Copy all files contained in the DosTool folder (from AFUDOS.EXE to Y.txt) and the ROM folder on the USB flash drive.

4- Boot on the USB flash drive (see the note).

5- When you are on MS-DOS, type the command FLASH1M.BAT

6- If it's flashing successfully, reboot your system (normally, it reboot automatically).

7- Enter on the bios setup utility, "Load optimazed defaults" or "Load default settings".

Flashboot: Map to A: selected --> you'll see it like a FDD or USB FDD

Map to C: selected --> You'll see it like a HDD or USB HDD

HP: By default, Letter C --> you'll see it like a HDD or USB HDD
