Hello, I was given an Acer Aspire 5720z laptop as a gift. It was without use for about 8 months. When I powered it on the first thing I see is the Acer Logo screen and it has a option of pressing the F2 button on the lower left side of the screen. After that the screen changes as if to start windows but freezes only with a command prompt in the upper left side. I can not write anything nor will it do anything. I have tried pressing the F2 key at start up also the F6 and F8 but also nothing. Can this be that the hard disk needs to be replaced or is it something else?

You need recovery discs. F2 should get you into the bios to set your system to boot from USB or cd/dvd rom drive. Sounds like you lost the OS, I'm having the exact issue on an Aspire 5336. If f2 asks for a password & you don't know it you need to reset the CMOS battery by removing it for 20-30 minutes, then put it back in. Password will be gone. Very tricky, & a little scary to do, but can be done. YouTube is the best place to look.
