See what update is not downloading or in error andsearch for it on the M$ website download it yourself and and install it independently. it's a common occurance that updates have hiccups and won't install properly or install in error

Shouldabin but "As a attemmpt to solve this i restored to a clean factory state and tried again" so do not know if it was activated. Also Windows has been known to lose activation as when that happens it won't update. So first I would check to see if it was activated properly.

yes windows is known for this but usually would not let you update at all if the proudct key was not correct or the OS was not activiated at all. They only way is usually if you in that certian time frame window to activate ..which t o be honest i haven't seen demonstrated in view like with XP, Vista and Win 7 ( 30 days to activate etc )

If he ever accidentally connected to his work network he might have global policies set to update only from their servers instead of Microsoft... That would also give timeouts.

It was mentioned on another thread that id the clock is too far off real time, it will not update. Click on the clock on the right side of the tray, Select "Internet Time", "Change Settings" & click on "Update Now"

Thanks for your replies.

In the end it was just some unexpected behaviour from windows update.

Although the download counter did not start moving, it was downloading.

So after a long wait it suddenly jumped to 97% complete and started installing after that.

It might be that the number of updates (more than 60) caused windows update to malfunction.

also because of the number of updates it takes a long time to find them, and that is why it seemed it could not find any.

so the bottomline is: patience.
