She brought it home this weekend and I got to see for myself the problem. She gets horizontal lines across the screen and if you put both thumbs on the bottom of the screen where it attaches and gently push in, the line will go away for a little bit. I think that it may be a connection problem internally like there is a loose cable or soemthing.

My daughter has an Acer Aspire 5336 and she has problems sometimes with the video screen not working. She sometimes has to play with it to get it to work. Has there been any problems with the video screens on these laptops? Can I connect a regular monitor to it and bypass the screen that is part of the laptop? She has only had the laptop for 2 years and is now in college and using it more than ever.

It may be of benefit if you were to describe specifically what is involved in, "She sometimes has to play with it to get it to work."

Yes, it is possible to use an external monitor with the system.
