I have an Acer V5-531 that came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit preinstalled.

Is it safe to try to shrink the partitions and install Linux alongside the Windows?

I've read a few horror stories posted on discussion boards about being unable to boot even to the BIOS after trying to install a different operating system than the original one installed on the Acer V5. However, the cases I have seen reported involved Windows 8, so I am wondering I can avoid those sorts of problems since this computer has Windows 7.

And if it is safe, are there essential steps I should take before starting to avoid problems?
